Breaking New Ground

A first-of-its-kind methane measurement campaign in Poland led by scientists from EDF, IMEO, and the European Space Agency. The project focused on coal mines in Upper Silesia - one of Europe’s largest methane hotspots - where emissions were measured directly on the ground and compared with official mine reporting.

Challenge

Coal mine methane is invisible, complex, and often underreported. The challenge was to capture and communicate rigorous scientific measurements from active industrial sites in a way that is clear, credible, and accessible beyond the scientific community.

Result

The campaign delivered the first ground-based, mine-level methane measurements in Poland, suggesting that emissions may be higher than officially reported. The findings support EU methane mitigation efforts and are expected to inform future climate policy and scientific publications.
